HKBU holds naming ceremony for Andrew Hung Lecture Theatre

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held the naming ceremony for the Andrew Hung Lecture Theatre on 18 April in recognition of the recent generous donation of HK$4 million from Mr Hung Kwong-yee, Chairman, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ten Pao Group Holdings Limited cum Founder of the Andrew Hung Memorial Fund. The donation has been designated for the establishment of the “Chinese Medicine Clinical Research Fund” to support the clinical research in stroke by the School of Chinese Medicine at HKBU, with the aim to benefit more elderly and people in need.

The naming ceremony was officiated by Mr Hung Kwong-yee and Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. In his welcoming remarks, Professor Wai commended Mr Hung as a distinguished business leader and a staunch supporter of HKBU. He made various donations to the University including those designated for the development of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, the establishment of the “Ten Pao Group Holdings Limited Scholarship” and the “Andrew Hung Memorial Fund for Business Entrepreneurship Support and Training”. Mr Hung is an Honorary University Fellow of HKBU.

Professor Wai said: “Apart from his generous contribution, Mr Hung is also an Honorary Court Member of the University and a Member of the Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation, offering wise counsel to the University’s governance and development. With the staunch support of Mr Hung and his family, HKBU is in a stronger position to offer our students the best learning experience, and take forward its pursuit of research excellence.”

Speaking at the Ceremony, Mr Hung thanked HKBU for naming the Lecture Theatre after his beloved son. He said: “As an entrepreneur, I always strive to provide the youths with resources and opportunities, and nurture them to become distinguished future leaders to contribute to society and the nation. I am glad to see that the programmes, which are under the names of my company and my beloved son, can contribute to the academic and research development of HKBU. I sincerely hope that HKBU will continue to offer the best student learning experience, nurture more outstanding talents, and make breakthroughs in research development, so as to contribute to the well-being of mankind.”

The Andrew Hung Lecture Theatre is located on the second floor of the Wing Lung Bank Building for Business Studies. Equipped with comprehensive audio and visual facilities, it is suitable for teaching activities and events such as lectures and seminars.

The ceremony was well attended by guests including Mr Hung Kwong-yee’s daughter Ms Nancy Hung Sui-lam, and his friends such as Mrs Mary Suen, Director of SML Group; as well as HKBU representatives including Professor Rick Wong, Interim Provost, Acting Vice-President (Research and Development) and Acting Dean of Graduate School; Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) and Acting Dean of Arts; Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary; Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development); Professor Lyu Aiping, Dean of Chinese Medicine; and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.
