Professor Zhang Boli, Leader in Modern Chinese Medicine Research was invited to give a talk at the distinguished scholar lecture series held by the School on 15 November. He shared his expert views on the “Development and Prospect of Modernization of Chinese Materia Medica” before an audience of about 120 faculty members, students, alumni and representatives from the Chinese medicine profession.
On the same day, Professor Zhang Boli was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, at the Inauguration of the President and Vice-Chancellor and Degree Conferment Ceremony of Hong Kong Baptist University.
Professor Zhang Boli is currently President of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Vice President of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, and Honorary Professor of the School of Chinese Medicine of HKBU. Over the past 30 years, Professor Zhang has engaged in teaching, research and clinical practice related to heart and brain vascular diseases. Professor Zhang has initiated new component-based designs and models for manufacturing modern Chinese medicine. He founded the first Traditional Chinese Medicine Engineering Institute to begin empirical research on tongue diagnosis. During the SARS pandemic in 2003, Professor Zhang was in charge of the treatment of SARS using Chinese medicine in Tianjin City.
Professor Zhang has published some 200 articles over the years. He served as Principal Scientist of two projects of the National Basic Research Programme (also known as the 973 programme) to study Chinese medicine formulas. He has been honoured with five National Science and Technology Advancement Awards and around 20 provincial-level Science and Technology Advancement Awards, and obtained a total of 16 patents.
