Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) in Chinese Medicine

Launched in 2001, Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) in Chinese Medicine of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is the sole full-time undergraduate pharmacy programme funded by University Grants Committee in Hong Kong.

Programme Aims

The aim of the programme is to equip students with the knowledge in (i) authentication, identification, quality analysis, quality control and patenting of Chinese medicines (CMs); (ii) the new dosage-form design of modern Chinese medicinal products; (iii) fundamental skills in research and development of Chinese medicinal products; and (iv) regualation and management of the pharmaceutical industry in Hong Kong.

Programme Details

The programme encompasses pharmaceutical science of Chinese Materia Medica, basic theories of Chinese Medicine, basic sciences, Western pharmacy and practicum training. During the four-year of studies, students are required to complete a 15-week practicum, and in the final year, students are required to carry out an Honours Project before graduation. Throughout the programme, research concepts and tools are emphasized, and the concept of “Whole Person Education” is also stressed by providing a student-oriented, adaptive and holistic education in the General Education Programme.

Practicum & Honors Project

As early as in the summer of the 1st year of studies, students will have an opportunity to broaden their knowledge in different research areas of medicinal herbs by taking a 2-week practicum in Hong Kong and Mainland. In the summer of 3rd year and the 4th year of studies, students will begin their Supervised Practicums II & III. The arrangement is listed as below:-

  • Shenzhen Tsumura Medicine Co. Ltd.
    To conduct the unique processing of Chinese material medica and examine the quality of Chinese medicinal decoction pieces.
     
  • Local or Mainland Pharmaceutical Company
    To exercise the production and quality examination of Chinese proprietary drugs.
     
  • Visit of pharmaceutical companies in Hong Kong
     
  • Pharmacy department of Chinese medicine clinics in Hong Kong
    To practice the dispensing skill and pharmacy management in the clinics of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Yan Chai Hospital, Yan Oi Tong, Pok Oi Hospital and HKBU CM's clinics.
     
  • Guangdong Province Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine
    To practice at the dispensing sector, storage room of Chinese medicinal decoction pieces, and decoction preparation sector.
     

In the 4th year of studies, students are required to conduct an 8-month Honours Project under the supervision of professors in the School. The research topics include authentication of Chinese materia medica and medicinal herbs, phytochemical constitution and quality control, herbal pharmacology and toxicology, as well as Chinese medicine preparation and new Chinese medicine products development.

Admission Requirements

The major student intake is Form 6 graduates with Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination results who applied via the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS). Applicants with suitable qualifications will also be considered. The approximate annual intake is 15.
