SCM hosts a visit by BUCM President Xu Anlong

25 July 2023

SCM was honoured to have invited Professor Xu Anlong, President of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM), to visit the School from 18 to 21 July.

On 19 July, Professor Xu delivered a distinguished lecture entitled “From the Diversity of Immune Regulation to the Anti-viral Mechanisms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM),” sharing the latest progress made by his research team, as well as his insights on antibody rearrangement, natural immune recognition, immune gene expression regulation in the context of infectious diseases, as well as translational application of the immune-regulatory strategies to the therapeutic discovery of TCM and associated formulae against the complex diseases. Professor Xu concluded the lecture with an open discussion on the potential applicability and the scientific value of artificial intelligence techniques in future explorations of TCM. Around 50 scientists and research students at HKBU attended the lecture in person and were deeply inspired by his talk.

During the visit, Professor Xu participated in a roundtable meeting with Professor Lyu Aiping, Dean of Chinese medicine, and the SCM management to discuss the development of Chinese medicine and its prospects in the Greater Bay Area.  He also met with BUCM alumni to learn about their achievements.  He visited the Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development (CDD) at Hong Kong Science Park, during which Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development) and Director of the CDD, together with Professor Wang Yitao, Special Advisor of the CDD and Director of the Macao Centre for Research and Development in Chinese Medicine, introduced the Centre’s establishment, its R&D platforms, and its objectives, as well as led him on a laboratory tour.

An eminent molecular biologist and immunologist, Professor Xu has been instrumental in promoting the modernisation and internationalisation of Chinese medicine.  Currently serving as President of BUCM, his main research is focusing on understanding the origin and evolution of vertebrate immune system as well as discovering new drugs based on basic researches, particularly for the immune regulation of TCM diseases.

SCM receives internationally renowned scholars and delegations from TCM field to share and exchange insights on ways to advance the development of Chinese medicine.  The School also provides valuable opportunities for its researchers and research students to learn from these scholars.
