Dr. Xavier Wong receives China's Excellent Young Scientists Fund 2023

 6 September 2023

Recently, Dr. Xavier Wong, Associate Professor of the Teaching and Research Division (CMTR), has been awarded the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) under the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Dr. Wong's awarded project, "Investigating the Molecular Mechanism and Therapeutic Strategy for Type 2 Diabetes," will receive funding of RMB 2 million to support its research endeavours. Dr. Wong explained, "In exploring the mechanisms and treatment strategies for diabetes, our research has two important directions. First, based on our previous basic research on metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP), we hope to discover innovative drugs. Secondly, we will continue to identify the role of other metalloproteinases in basic research. This project is expected to achieve significant breakthroughs in the field of metalloproteinase and diabetes research, providing new possibilities for the treatment of diabetes and the development of related drugs."

Professor Jia Wei, Acting Dean of Chinese Medicine, congratulated Dr. Wong on receiving the generous funding. He said: “This national recognition not only acknowledges Dr. Wong’s exceptional talent but also underscores the School’s commitment to impact-driven research.”

NSFC is managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). The Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) is highly competitive and is granted annually to support young scientists in Hong Kong and Macao regions who have outstanding achievements in basic research. This year, two scholars from HKBU have been awarded this fund.
