Expert Insight: Exploring the role of traditional Chinese medicine in treating severe infectious diseases

1 December 2023

SCM held a seminar entitled “Preliminary Exploration of the Role and Mechanism of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Treating Severe Infectious Diseases” by Professor Zheng Yuejuan, Associate Dean of the School of Integrative Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine on 29 November.

Professor Zheng's research focuses on respiratory viral infectious diseases. She provided a detailed analysis of the clinical manifestations, composition, and tissue distribution within the body of Qingfei Paidu Decoction (QFPDD), a TCM formula used in the treatment of these infections.

Employing single-cell sequencing technology, multicolor flow cytometry, and Western blot analysis, her team explored how QFPDD regulates the composition of immune cells and cytokine control in the lungs of mice infected with the virus. They further elucidated the functions and drug targets of the primary active molecules in QFPDD.

Professor Zheng’s sharing supplemented our understanding of the potential of TCM in treating severe infectious diseases. We look forward to more pioneering research from Professor Zheng and her team in the future.

This event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the K. C. Wong Education Foundation – HKBU Fellowship Programme for Mainland China Visiting Scholars.
