Spotlight: The Seventh Cheung On Tak International Award for Outstanding Contribution to Chinese Medicine conferred on Academician Liu Liang and Professor Xu Anlong

The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) presented the Seventh Cheung On Tak International Award for Outstanding Contribution to Chinese Medicine (COT Award) to Academician Liu Liang (specialist in traditional Chinese medicine internal medicine, Professor of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and Former Dean of SCM at HKBU) and Professor Xu Anlong (specialist in molecular biology and immunology, President of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine) yesterday (27 March), in recognition of their achievements in inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine and contributions to the promotion of Chinese medicine to the world.

In his opening address, Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, stated that Hong Kong will serve as a demonstration for "International Modern Research on Traditional Chinese Medicine." Since the establishment of SCM, HKBU has been committed to nurturing professionals and accumulating strengths in the Chinese medicine field in Hong Kong. After a quarter century of dedicated efforts, we have gained a deeper understanding of the significant role of traditional Chinese medicine in the global health science sector.

Academician Chen Kaixian, Chairman of the Panel of Adjudicators, remarked that both awardees have made systematic and innovative contributions to the development of novel drugs and modernisation and internationalisation of traditional Chinese medicine, earning recognition and acclaim both domestically and internationally. The COT Award has been receiving increasing attention from the society and academia, reflecting the growing acceptance of Chinese medicine worldwide.

On receiving the award, Academician Liu and Professor Xu said that this honour recognises their efforts and achievements in the Chinese medicine field, and pledged to continue working towards the robust development of Chinese medicine across the globe.

Following the ceremony, Academician Liu and Professor Xu each delivered a lecture. Academician Liu shared his original research on the treatment of rheumatic diseases by integrating Chinese and Western medicine, and Professor Xu focused on the internationalisation of Chinese medicine and shared his unique insights on the mutual learning between Eastern and Western civilizations. Both awardees engaged in interactive discussion with the audience during the Q&A session, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

The event attracted almost 150,000 participants who joined in person and online, reaching a record-breaking figure.

SCM expresses heartfelt congratulations to the two awardees and deep gratitude to the Cheung On Tak Charity Foundation for its generous donation. Since its establishment in 2011, the COT Award honoured a total of 12 scientists and scholars who have made groundbreaking and internationally recognised achievements in advancing the internationalisation of Chinese medicine or Chinese medicine research, and promoted the internationalisation and modernisation of Chinese medicine for the benefit of the global community. The School hopes to collaborate with the awardees to work towards the internationalisation of Chinese medicine, contributing to the well-being of people worldwide.
