Professor Zhang Hongjie, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) and Director of CMTR, has been appointed the Cheung On Tak Endowed Professor in Chinese Medicine, effective August 2024. Since joining the School in 2011, Professor Zhang has been dedicated to integrating traditional Chinese medicine with modern medical science, with a focus on natural product chemistry, particularly in developing novel anticancer and antiviral compounds. His research has led to the securing of over 40 patents and the publication of more than 190 journal articles, many of which have appeared in high-impact journals such as Journal of Natural Products and Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
Professor Zhang has successfully secured multiple grants from prestigious funding bodies, including the General Research Fund, the Innovation and Technology Commission, and the Health and Medical Research Fund. He has also demonstrated a strong commitment to knowledge transfer, as evidenced by the founding of Gihon Biotech Company Limited. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to academia, Professor Zhang was awarded the President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work by HKBU in 2017. Furthermore, he has been consistently ranked among the world's top 2% scientists by Stanford University since 2021, a testament to his significant contributions in the field of natural drug discovery.
