The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) and the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council (the Welfare Council) launched the four-year “BOC-HKBU Chinese Medicine Community Stroke Prevention and Rehabilitation Scheme” in 2020, supported by a generous donation from the Bank of China (Hong Kong). The Scheme has provided more than 31,000 Chinese medicine treatment sessions to elderly stroke patients and those at medium to high risk of stroke, benefiting nearly 95,000 individuals through various channels, including talks, website, and training programmes.
As the Scheme concluded at the end of October, an exhibition was held from 26 to 27 October to showcase the remarkable results. Officiating guests included Dr. Chung Chi-ho, Commissioner for Chinese Medicine Development of the Chinese Medicine Unit of the Health Bureau; Mr. Peter Ng, Assistant General Manager of the Public Sector and Institutional Business Department of the Bank of China (Hong Kong); Professor Chan Wing-kwong, member of the Legislative Council; Ms. Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary of HKBU; Professor Li Min, Executive Associate Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine at HKBU; and Ms. Wong Chui-yan, Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council.
Professor Li Min expressed gratitude to the Bank of China (Hong Kong) for supporting the collaboration between SCM and the Welfare Council to implement the Scheme. She affirmed SCM’s continuous commitment to supporting and initiating various community Chinese medicine services which aims to make greater contributions to public health.
Under the Scheme, nearly 470 stroke recovery patients received more than 28,000 acupuncture, massage therapy and Chinese medicine treatment. Designated Chinese medicine practitioners were arranged to patients, enabling better monitoring of patient’s conditions and follow-up treatment which greatly enhanced their confidence. All these contributed to the significant improvements in patients' self-care abilities, cognitive functions and neurological functions, thus enhancing their life quality.
The Scheme also provided free Chinese herbal tea treatment for stroke prevention to over 1,000 eligible high-risk individuals. Data indicates that people with constitutions of phlegm-dampness and blood stasis are significantly associated with a higher risk of stroke. After receiving four months of treatment, the body constitutions of such participants improved, thereby reducing their risk of stroke.
Additionally, 138 elders were trained to serve as “Senior Ambassadors for Stroke Prevention”, further enhancing public awareness and knowledge about stroke prevention through more than 200 talks and an informative website.
