The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), in collaboration with the Hong Kong Authentication Centre of Valuable Chinese Medicines, successfully hosted the 2024 Hong Kong Summit on Quality Control of Valuable Chinese Medicines at the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) on 19 October. The event attracted over 100 participants from the Chinese medicine industry and academia.

The Summit featured four insightful lectures by seasoned scholars and experts in the academia, sharing experiences and insights on innovative scientific approaches and advanced techniques on the authentication and quality evaluation of Chinese medicines.  The topics cover “The application of classical and high throughput DNA sequencing for the authentication of herbal material”, “Research on quality assurance systems for Cicadae Periostracum resources”, “The mechanism of anti-colitis effects of Astragali polysaccharide RAP”, and “A chemical marker for screening sulfur-treated herbal medicines”. Scholars engaged in meaningful discussions with attendees on critical issues such as identification and sustainable development of herbal resources.

Since its inception in 2018, this annual Summit fosters communication and collaboration between the industry and the academia, aiming to advance the standardisation and internationalisation of traditional Chinese medicine and more importantly, to uphold the safety, efficacy and quality control of Chinese medicines, thus enhancing public confidence and awareness in the safety use of Chinese medicines.
