Dr. Chong Wai Po, Associate Professor from the Teaching and Research Division, has been awarded over HK$2.4 million in funding from the Innovation and Technology Support Programme (Mid-stream, theme-based) for his pioneering research project.

The project, titled “The Role of Interleukin 24 in Regulating Ocular Inflammation: A Novel Cytokine for the Treatment of Autoimmune Uveitis” aims to investigate the potential of Interleukin 24 (IL-24) in mitigating eye inflammation and preventing vision loss caused by the immune system disorders. The research team, led by Dr. Chong and comprising Dr. Ren Kangning from the Faculty of Science and collaborators from Hong Kong and the U.S., has verified the safety and efficacy of IL-24. It will further explore the mechanisms of IL-24 and develop an innovative delivery method for controlled and sustained release, laying the groundwork for clinical trials to assess IL-24 as a potential therapeutic option for eye inflammation.

Dr. Chong’s achievement underscores the School’s significant contributions to advancing biomedical research and its capability for fostering interdisciplinary collaborations to tackle complex health challenges.
