Kenny Woo Shi-nam,  a Year 4 student of the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biomedical Science, has distinguished himself among the local undergraduates with the award of the 2024/25 Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship. This accolade not only recognises his outstanding performance but also sets him apart as the only Chinese medicine student among this year’s six award winners.

Kenny’s passion for Chinese medicine stemmed from a poignant experience during his secondary school years: A family member has struggled with vitiligo as no Western treatments were found effective, however, a remarkable relief was experienced after a few doses of Chinese medicines. This experience ignited Kenny’s deep interest in Chinese medicine, inspiring him to devote himself to its study and to bring hope and healing to others.

Upon receiving the award, Kenny expressed heartfelt gratitude to his teachers for their selfless devotion to teaching and the invaluable learning opportunities offered by the School. “From lecture room to clinic, from classical texts to modern therapies, every step brings me closer to fulfilling the mission of a Chinese medicine practitioner,” he remarked.  The knowledge and experience gained through clinical internships, acupuncture and massage practice through service-learning, and the indigenous therapies encountered during exchanges at Hunan University of Chinese Medicine have enriched his understanding of the core principle of Chinese medicine: “syndrome differentiation and treatment”.  He said, “Seeing patients’ pain alleviated, I have come to understand the essence of a healer’s compassion.”

With a clear vision for his future, Kenny aspires to become a Chinese medicine practitioner.  He will continue to deepen his understanding of traditional Chinese medicine and its applications through further study for a master's and doctoral degree, and to promote Chinese medicine and its benefits to the broader public.
