Rising Star in Research: Sunny Luo awarded the “For Our Future Create the Future Science and Technology Scholarship”

16 April 2025

PhD student Mr. Sunny Luo Jingyuan receives the 2024-25 “For Our Future Innovation and Technology Scholarship”, making him one of the ten doctoral students to receive this honour.

Sunny graduated with first-class honours in his bachelor’s degree from the School and has since become a Chinese medicine practitioner. Under the guidance of Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, his research focuses on the application of traditional Chinese herbs in treating functional bowel diseases and post-COVID syndromes.  He has participated in several research projects, including the development of the first botanical drug in Hong Kong for treating elderly constipation, which received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for clinical trials in the U.S. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he joined Professor Bian at the Tsing Yi mobile cabin hospital to provide patient care and later contributed to clinical studies at the HKBU Chinese Medicine Telemedicine Centre and Kai Tak Holding Centre, through which he helped deepen public understanding of post-COVID syndrome.

Holding his scholarship certificate, Sunny expressed his heartfelt gratitude, “When I first stepped into the School building, I thought I was just here to study and I never expected to discover my life’s mission. During my undergraduate and postgraduate studies, I had the opportunities of participating in service projects in Qinghai and internship at the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, and taking care of patients at the mobile cabin hospital during the pandemic. These invaluable and hands-on experiences have transformed me into a genuine Chinese medicine practitioner. Witnessing the suffering of patients made me realise the urgent need for drug research and discovery.” Sunny schedules to complete his graduation thesis this academic year, and aspires to pursue both clinical and research endeavors after graduation. He remarked, “My goal is to integrate Chinese medicine clinical study with precision medicine, aiming to translate research findings into clinical solutions for benefiting a wider community.”

The School extends its warmest congratulations to Sunny on his achievement. As a pioneer in higher education for Chinese medicine, the School offers a comprehensive range of programmes, from undergraduate to master’ and doctoral studies, which have nurtured a diverse range of talents who excel in both clinical practice and research, playing a pivotal role in advancing the modernisation of Chinese medicine.
