The transdisciplinary research team led by Professor Li Min, Dean of Chinese Medicine, has successfully secured RMB3 million funding from the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macau Science and Technology Project (Category C) for the project titled “Preclinical studies of exosome-mediated autophagy inducers targeting neurons for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease”. The team comprises experts and researchers from different fields, including Professor Ye Keqiang from Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology, as well as Professor Yang Zhijun, Dr. Deng Zhiqiang and Dr. Iyaswamy Ashok from HKBU.

Leveraging on Professor Li’s expertise in the development of Chinese medicinal products for neurodegenerative diseases, and Professor Ye’s research strengths in brain function and neurological disease mechanisms, the project will elucidate the anti-Alzheimer’s properties of the exosome-encapsulated Chinese medicinal small molecule CoryB and investigate its therapeutic potential in a variety of animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. The team aspires to develop an innovative and effective therapeutic strategy and candidate drug for the disease, aiming to alleviate patients’ symptoms and lessen the burden borne by families and society at large.

Professor Li Min expressed her gratitude to the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission for their support and looks forward to collaborating with more leading institutions to advance scientific research for the benefit of patients and their families.
