Bringing TCM to the world: Professor Lyu Aiping appointed to WHO advisory group on traditional medicine

12 January 2026

Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development), Chair Professor of the School of Chinese Medicine and Dr. Kennedy Y H Wong Endowed Professor in Chinese Medicine, has been appointed as a member of the newly established Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (STAG-TM) of the World Health Organization (WHO). This appointment reflects the growing importance of traditional medicine within the global public health architecture and reaffirms the international standing and influence of HKBU’s leadership in traditional Chinese medicine.

The Second WHO Traditional Medicine Global Summit held in New Delhi, India in December 2025 brought together representatives from more than 100 countries to witness the establishment of STAG-TM and the official appointment of 19 independent experts worldwide, and the launch of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034. As a member of the inaugural STAG-TM, Professor Lyu spoke at the forum on “Quality, Efficiency and Patient Safety” on the use of data-driven strategies to enhance the integration of traditional medicine into healthcare systems.

STAG-TM is tasked with providing WHO with high-level scientific counsel on global research priorities, norms and policies in the field of traditional and complementary medicine. Professor Lyu’s participation will help ensure that the professional perspectives and evidence-based experience of Chinese medicine and other traditional medical systems are fully reflected in the formulation of future standards for global health governance.

“Traditional medicine will no longer be an isolated alternative option, but rather integrated into the future global health system to serve human well-being,” Professor Lyu said. “This is my mission at the STAG-TM.”
