Academic Seminar: Reflection on Auricular Therapy in Brain Disorders with An Integrative Approach of Chinese and Western Medicine

30 March 2026

On 30 March 2026, Professor Rong Peijing, Director of the Institute of Basic Research in Clinical Medicine at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, delivered an insightful seminar titled “A Practice Reflection of an Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine Researcher — New Scientific Evidence for Auricular Therapy in Brain Disorders” at the School of Chinese Medicine.

In this seminar, Professor Rong shared her research journey in integrating traditional Chinese medicine and neuroscience. She elaborated on the correspondence between vagal innervation of the auricular concha and auricular acupoints in the “visceral representation” zone, and proposed a potential mechanistic pathway linking auricular acupoints, the vagus nerve, the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), and brain networks. Building on these insights, she systematically introduced transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a non-invasive and convenient therapy, and backed its effectiveness with morphological, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging evidence, shedding light on the treatment of epilepsy, depression, disorders of consciousness, insomnia, and mild cognitive impairment.

The School is committed to building a diverse platform for academic exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration, and fostering a dynamic teaching and research environment to broaden the international perspectives of both faculty and students. These ongoing efforts provide a strong foundation for future collaboration and innovation across fields.
