As the world grapples with the challenge of an ageing population, the health and well-being of the elderly have become a global priority. The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) has received a generous donation of HK$30 million from the Musketeers Education and Culture Charitable Foundation Limited (the Foundation) to establish the “HKBU Musketeers Foundation Institute for Age-related Diseases”. The University held a naming ceremony for the Institute on 2 July to acknowledge this significant support.

The Institute will focus on three major areas of age-related diseases: neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases, obesity and diabetes, and osteoarthritis. By integrating the wisdom of Chinese medicine with modern scientific research, the Institute will spearhead the development of novel solutions for preventive, therapy and rehabilitation to address ageing challenges.

At the ceremony, Dr. Sunny Chai, Deputy Chairman of the HKBU Council and Court, thanked the Foundation for its far-sighted philanthropy.  He remarked that the initiative not only address pressing healthcare needs but also fully reflects the profound recognition and trust that the three Co-founders have in HKBU’s pioneering role in Chinese medicine education and research in Hong Kong.”

Mr. Stanley Chu, Co-founder of the Foundation, articulated his high hopes for the collaboration, calling it an important milestone in promoting innovation in Chinese medicine and elderly healthcare that will inject new impetus into Hong Kong’s development as a hub for scientific innovation in the field.

Echoing this forward-looking vision, Professor Li Min, Dean of Chinese Medicine cum Founding Director of the Institute, affirmed a steadfast commitment: “Chinese medicine holds unique potential in tackling age-related diseases. The Institute will focus on clinical translation, turning our research into tangible benefits to ensure elderly receive the care they deserve.”
