Evidence-Based TCM: Professor Tan Hor Yue Awarded HMRF for CDD-2103 Clinical Trial Targeting IBS-D

17 Aug 2026

Professor Tan Hor Yue, Associate Professor of the Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development, has received over HK$1.48 million from the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Chinese herbal formulation CDD-2103 in patients with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). IBS-D, a common chronic disorder characterised by recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhea, affects around 7% of the Hong Kong population and up to 37% in Chinese Mainland, yet treatment options remain limited.

In this collaborative study involving Chinese medicine practitioners, researchers, and healthcare providers, the self-developed CDD-2103, a standardised formula of nine Chinese herbs, will be tested in IBS-D patients over an 8-week intervention followed by a 4-week observation to evaluate its clinical response, safety, and tolerability compared with placebo. “By scientifically validating CDD-2103 as a safe, effective, and natural treatment option, we hope that it will not only improve patients’ health but also promote the integration of Chinese medicine into the mainstream healthcare system,” said Professor Tan.

The School will continue to support innovative research in Chinese medicine, advancing evidence-based practice, and enhancing its global standing to address pressing health challenges.
