The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) has been awarded an HK$8 million grant from the Chinese Medicine Development Fund (CMDF) to launch the “Territory-wide Chinese Medicine Cultural Education, Promotion and Publicity Project in Schools” (the “C2 Project”). The project aims to develop a systematic “Chinese Medicine Cultural Education Teaching Resource Kit” for local secondary school students, designed to enhance the teaching of Chinese medicine within the current curriculum.

Addressing the current piecemeal and fragmented coverage of Chinese medicine education in current secondary school curriculum, the project team will collaborate with professional educators and researchers to develop a comprehensive teaching kit tailored for students at all levels, progressing from foundational to advanced concepts. The content will be integrated across disciplines – including Chinese Literature, History, Philosophy, and Science - enabling teachers to seamlessly weave Chinese medicine knowledge into their existing lessons and providing students with a structured understanding of this cultural treasure.

Project Investigator Professor Chan Kam Wa Chris stated, “Our teaching materials are designed based on two core principles: practical and user-friendly. The goal is to empower teachers to enrich the curriculum and impart foundational knowledge of Chinese medicine without significantly altering their lesson plans or increasing their workload. We hope this also creates an opportunity for both teachers and students to explore this profound knowledge together.”

To create a holistic learning experience, the project will feature a diverse range of resources and activities. These include multimedia teaching videos, hands-on workshops, visits to Chinese medicine hospitals and clinics, and the development of a comprehensive e-learning resource library, extending learning far beyond the classroom.

The project will be piloted in 20 secondary schools across Hong Kong, with an estimated reach of over 3,000 teachers and students. Through pre- and post-assessments and in-depth interviews, the team will continuously refine the materials to ensure their professional quality and pedagogical effectiveness, with the ultimate goal of benefiting all schools in Hong Kong.
