A clinical study of the School of Chinese Medicine revealed that more than 50% of patients suffering from allergic rhinitis and more than 40% of bronchial asthma patients found their symptoms alleviated after receiving the traditional Chinese medicine treatment Tian Jiu.
Tian Jiu treatment, a traditional Chinese medicine therapy involves the application of a paste made from powdered Chinese medicine herbs onto designated acupuncture points to stimulate and regulate the meridians and collaterals system. TianJiu treatments are mainly done during the dog days (the hottest days of the year) and Sanjiutian (the coldest days of the year).
HKBU’s School of Chinese Medicine has been offering Tian Jiu treatment since 2002. To further study the curative effect of Tian Jiu treatment, the Clinical Division of the School conducted a follow-up telephone survey of patients who received Tian Jiu from 2010 to 2013 to treat allergic rhinitis or bronchial asthma.
The study found that, among the 3,438 patients included in the survey (aged from 3 to 75), 52% -- 67% of the patients with allergic rhinitis and 43% -- 73% of the patients with bronchial asthma found their symptoms alleviated (Table 1) and 32% -- 50% of those surveyed reported that their body constitution had been improved (Table 2).
Dr Yang Junjun, Lecturer of the Clinical Division of the School of Chinese Medicine, said that the research team considers Tian Jiu treatment not only a convenient and simple supplementary therapy for allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma, but also an effective way to improve the constitution of the body and protect patients from influenza.
