Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biomedical Science of the Hong Kong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), launched in 1998, is the first full-time undergraduate Chinese medicine (CM) programme funded by the University Grants Committee in Hong Kong.
The aim of this double-degree programme is to equip students with a comprehensive and practical understanding of Chinese medicine. The ultimate goal is to train a new generation of Chinese medicine practitioners with the ability to integrate modern science and technology with Chinese medicine principles on a scientific basis for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
This is a 6-year full-time double degree programme, with 15-month internship training, and an Honours Project. The curriculum of the programme encompasses extensive courses in Chinese medicine as well as courses in biomedical and clinical Western medicine, in an approximate ratio of 7:3.
Instructors in this programme use diversified teaching tools and activities, including multimedia teaching aids, case study, group discussion, and laboratory practice, medicinal herb field trips, and hospital visits to achieve outcome-based teaching and learning. To uphold the spirit of “Whole Person Education” as advocated by the University, 31 credits courses in general education are included in the new curriculum.

Clinical practice plays an important role in learning Chinese medicine. Students are required to conduct clinical practicum training in the following Chinese medicine clinics runs by HKBU from the 1st years onwards. In the fifth and sixth years, students are also required to complete 12-month internship in a Chinese Medicine teaching hospital in mainland China, followed by a 3-month specialised clinical internship.
There are a total of 16 Chinese medicine clinics under the School of Chinese Medicine, nine of which are operated directly by the Clinical Division.
This is a 6-unit Honors Project and the aim is to provide students with first hand experience on scientific research. Students may choose a topic from a wide variety of areas, ranging from laboratory experience, eqidemiologic study and clinical investigation of Chinese medicine.
