SCM Held the Seminar on Herb Polysaccharides and Intestinal Immunology

21 December 2024

SCM successfully organised the “Seminar on Herb Polysaccharides and Intestinal Immunology” on 21 December, attracting over 400 participants online and offline from academia, industry and healthcare sector.  The event also marked the establishment of the Research Centre for Herb Polysaccharides and Intestinal Immunology (“Centre”) at the University.

In the welcoming speech, Professor Li Min, Executive Associate Dean of SCM, emphasised the School’s commitment to promote precision medicine, translational studies, and standardisation and globalisation of Chinese medicine.  She highlighted that the new Centre will provide a new research platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in Chinese medicine, symbolising another important milestone in the School’s development.”

Five top-notch scholars shared their latest research progress on herbs polysaccharides and intestinal immunity at the seminar.

In keynote speeches, Professor So Kwok-fai, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, explored the effects of lycuim barbarum glycopeptide on neuroprotection and neuroregeneration, while Professor Xie Mingyong, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, shared his research on the structural characterisation and biological activity of food-derived polysaccharides.

Invited speakers, including Professor Ding Kan from Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Zeng Xiaoxiong from College of Food Science and Technology, Nanjing Agricultural University, and Professor Chen Lanfen from School of Life Sciences, Xiamen University, presented in-depth discussions on the mechanism of polysaccharides targeting intestinal flora, regulatory effects of lycium barbarum polysaccharides on immunity and blood sugar homeostasis, and the regulatory effects of mechanical force on immunity.

Professor Han Quanbin, the Centre’s Director, thanked the speakers for their insightful presentations in the closing remarks. He reaffirmed the Centre’s mission to advance research in herb polysaccharides and to contribute to public health.

The School looks forward to strengthening collaborations between the Centre and experts in the field to pioneer groundbreaking research in the future.
